8 Great Burgers

Burgers are a perfect food in my opinion. They lend themselves to creative concoctions that please just about anyone. Where the first hamburger was made and served is still undecided, some say that it was the street vendors of New York City that made the hamburger in the US popular. In an effort to attract the German sailor to their food stalls, they would advertise “steak cooked in the Hamburg style.” The hamburger made the Oxford English Dictionary in 1802, but the definition is not like the hamburgers popular today. As more and more German-speaking immigrants made their way to the US, they brought with them their family recipes for Hamburg steak: minced beef with spices served cooked or raw. In 1826 the first American restaurant put Hamburger on the menu: Delmonico’s of New York City. Since then chefs and casual cooks from all over America have been adding their own twist to this American classic. Here are my eight favorite recipes for hamburgers:

  1. The Classic
  2. Turkey Burgers/Cobb Burger
  3. Big Bad BBQ Cheese Burgers
  4. Blue Cheese Burgers with Chives and Sun-Dried Tomatoes
  5. Grill Shakers Feta Burgers
  6. The Salmon Burger
  7. Homemade Veggie Burger
  8. The Black Bean
