Your Child's Protein Intake

It is pretty easy to keep track of how much protein your child is getting. Most food labels list the total number protein grams per serving on the label, however you should note that food manufacturers are not required to list the number of protein grams on the label unless the statement “high in protein” is made or if the product is meant for infant or toddler consumption. Here is an example of a child’s 35 grams of protein day:
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 cup low-fat milk
  • 1 cheese stick
  • 2 ounces chicken breast
Your child probably also will have whole grain bread, cereal, vegetables, pasta or rice, etc with the above items, adding yet more grams of protein to their day. That is fine, a well balanced diet is what you are looking for; but keep in mind, that no child should be put on a high protein-low carb type diet that are so fashionable with adult dieters these days.  Talk to you pediatrician of family doctor if you have any questions on this or other aspect of your child's diet.
