Ask Sadie
Q: My preteen daughter is concerned about her weight. She has a little weight, but she wants to lose it. She doesn’t even eat that much. What advice do you have for her?
A. We are seeing more and more young girls with more weight around their middle. Since I don’t know what her diet consists of I can only give some general advice: Don’t drink sodas, period. Do not drink any soft drinks with or without sugar in them. Stick with water. Read the labels of the foods you are eating and avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup and white sugar and flour as much as possible. Eat foods like plain low fat yogurt, with fruit and honey and drink low fat milk, as calcium is important to bone health and weight management. Stick with fresh fruits and veggies and whole grains and get moderate exercise every day. Keep it simple! Don’t diet, you need to eat to be healthy and being healthy is the only way to maintain your weight. Choose your foods wisely.
