Easter Eggs
I want to color my Easter eggs the perfect shade of teal, or maybe a dusty rose, or how about the exact color of a daffodil. But really I am hopeless at getting the colors exactly like the professionals. Don’t get me wrong, they look good, taste good and the kids are having fun creating colorful eggs, but just once I would love to create that perfect colored egg. Well McCormick has created the color wheel for people just like me. While I don’t use food coloring in our food, for coloring eggs I think it is just fine; and now with this color wheel I can get the exact combination of color drops to achieve my favorite colors. By the way, Teal is 15 drops of green and 5 drops of blue. For a more natural approach to dyeing Easter eggs try boiling the eggs in water with 2-4 Tbsp of wine vinegar and the following
- grass or spinach for green (use about 2 cups)
- blueberries for bluish purple (use about 2 cups)
- marigolds or calendula for orange (use flowers only, about 2 cups)
- turmeric for yellow (use about ¼ cup)
- red onion skins for a reddish purple (use the skins of at least 6 onions)
- yellow or white onion skins for a tan-ish yellow color (use the skins of at least 6 onions
- red wine or red wine vinegar for red (use about 1 cups)
Other great design tips:- Use the paper savers used for when you tear the hole in your loose leaf paper, you know the mini donuts shaped stickers. Use the dots as well as the donuts to create interesting polka dots on your eggs. Other shaped stickers will do the same, use letters to spell out names. After the egg is dried, gently peel off the stickers.
- Use a crayon or melted wax on a fine paint brush to draw a design on the egg and create a batik looking shell. Or use a fine black permanent marker to create a different look against a light colored egg.
- Paint blown eggs or hard boiled eggs with water colors paints.
- Remember tie dyeing? You can use rubber bands to create stripes on your eggs too. Put the band on with the egg white and dye the egg. Remove the bands and dye again or add more bands for different colored stripes.
